Damage Classification

NameSeligson et al. (1996) - Storage Tank
Hazard TypeEarthquake
Plant Unit TypeStorage Tank
Description

Damage states for horizontal storage vessels.

States
NoCodeNameDescription
1.DS1None

None or insignificant structural damage (damage ratio: 0 - 0.05%).

2.DS2Light

Slight movement of tank from support (damage ratio: 0.05 - 1.25%).

3.DS3Moderate

Failure of some connected piping; repairable damage to the tank support system; moderate likelihood of release of tank contents (damage ratio: 1.25 - 20%).

4.DS4Severe

Failure of most piping connections; tank support system completely failed; almost certain release of tank contents (damage ratio: 20 - 65%).

5.DS5Total

Failure of all piping connections; tank support system completely failed; tank itself damaged (possible buckling); contents of tank released (damage ratio: 65 - 100%).
